Current Responsibilities and Career Path
At CAPTRUST, I work with individuals across the country who are preparing for retirement through financial planning and wealth management. My career journey started in communications, which I studied at Wake Forest. As a magazine editor, I learned how powerful relationships can be in just about any field of work. So many of these relationship building skills I learned at Seafarer! This realization led me into my eventual career path of working in wealth management--building relationships with clients during a crucial time in their life, as they plan for and enter retirement.
Key Lessons from Camp
Attending and working at Camp shaped who I am and continues to lend to my growth as a professional. I'm an only child, so I credit my ability to share and collaborate to my cabin time at Seafarer! The "soft" skills of being a successful professional--skills that you often can't teach in school--I learned in Arapahoe.
Proud Achievements
I'm proud of the work I have done and continue to do with WALTER Magazine, and the amazing people in my community I get to spotlight and feature through stories. It all goes back to relationships--I'm proud of the friendships and work relationships I have fostered over almost a decade working in Raleigh and look forward to more along the way.
Influential Camp Mentor
I'm very lucky that my first SIC as a camper was Gretchen (Presnell) Hyde and my last was Mary Laurence (McMillan) Crook. What role models I had to emulate! These women are still in my life and they, along with countless others, have no doubt shaped who I am. In addition to mentors, most of my dearest friends and confidants to this day are my Seafarer friends--they are truly lifelong!
Advice for Staff
It sounds cheesy, but working at Camp literally builds character. Not every day is easy, but it's rewarding in a way a desk job isn't.
If I had one piece of advice to current staff members, it'd be to stay in touch! Your Camp friends and connections are special, hold onto them tight!
