Every year, the Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer staffs make a commitment to put the Campers’ needs before their own and do all that they can to make Camp a positive experience for each camper that enters the gates. Whether giving up their rest period to spend time listening to a camper or showing the same enthusiasm no matter how many ranks they have taught, it is always powerful to observe 17, 18, and 19 year olds in this environment.
Lightning Training has the unofficial title of camp’s flagship program for a reason. As part of an overall Sailing program with a mission to foster skill development and seamanship through quality directed instruction, Lightning Training has been the bellwether for the Sea Gull Sailing program, and an example for other activities in how to design and deliver instruction.
Last weekend was the 6th Annual William J. Adams IV Regatta at Camp Sea Gull. Every year, this event is a powerful display of the generosity of so many, the amazing person that Bill Adams was, and the impact that Camp is still having on the lives of adults years after their summers on the coast.
I was a camper and counselor at Seafarer from the late '60's through the late '70's. While I was attending the 50th anniversary weekend back in the fall of 2011, I tried to meet as many different age groups as I could. During the meals, walking the grounds and just talking, I kept hearing two themes:
1. What was it like to attend camp with Lil?
2. This place made me a better contributor to my community.
As I prepare for my first trip to Turkey, I am also thinking of how wonderful it would be to experience a “girls weekend” at Seafarer! What a perfect spot to explore the meaning and dynamic of LEADERSHIP! After all, Seafarer is where most of us learned and practiced what we use today in leadership positions. What a gift to come to a place that values our uniqueness and invites us to take on roles that we never thought we could manage.
The weather has just begun to get cooler here as we finish up a great Fall Season. We hope that school and fall activities are going well for you. The directors at Sea Gull and Seafarer are using this time to make plans for a great summer in 2014, and we hope that you are making plans to be a part of it as well!
Arlington Place, a waterfront community located in Minnesott Beach between Sea Gull and Seafarer, recently gave a significant gift of $24,000 to the Camp Annual Fund. Because of this generosity, over 137 children will be able to participate in Camp’s Day Camp Program this summer. Sea Gull and Seafarer provide children from Pamlico and other surrounding counties with a camp experience similar to that of our regular summer sessions, giving them the opportunity to enjoy camp’s activities, take swimming lessons, eat lunch in the Mess Hall, and participate in special events. You may have heard the buzz about the celebration held in Raleigh on Saturday evening, November 2. The “FIRE BALL” was a gala event to celebrate the success-to-date of Camp’s capital campaign…Setting Sail: Character in Action; and to launch the “public phase” of the campaign. The beautiful NC State Club (sorry UNC and Duke fans!) was the venue. Lots of volunteers and staff spent countless hours planning to host the almost 400 people who attended. The club was decorated to the hilt, the food was incredible and the band, Spare Change, turned their amps way up…way up!
If you have worked at Camp Sea Gull or Camp Seafarer, you might argue that being on staff is even more magical than days spent as a camper. Maybe it’s the late nights bonding with your cabin team during staff training; it could be the freedom of time-off, the friendships, the summer romances, or the opportunity to impact the lives of campers in a way that ultimately changes your own life.
Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer are thrilled to announce that we have been selected to host the 2014 Sunfish World and Youth World Championship on October 8-18, 2014. The planning process is well underway. The World Championship will welcome 72 sailors from all over the world along with their families, coaches, support crew and volunteers. The Youth World Championship will also welcome sailors from all over the world, and is open to qualified sailors under the age of 19.
We are thrilled to announce that 2013 was a record breaking year for the Camp Annual Fund! Thanks to the support of 1715 donors, $832,441 was raised to help meet our most pressing annual needs. This total exceeded our goal by $45,000!
Three churches. Two Camps. A dozen volunteers. A big dream and one Community Programs Director with a huge heart.
That's all it took to plant a 100-foot long, 10 row wide community garden behind the cage at Camp Seafarer on Friday, March 21st.
The summer of 2014 marks my 22nd summer at Camp. Hard to believe. In 1992, I was the head counselor of the Camp IV Possums. Appealing to teenage girls can be quite challenging, so I decided to go out on a limb (as an opossum might do) and create one theme for this age group to rally around. That theme was, ”Anything’s Possible”. Or in Camp IV’s case, “Anything’s Possum-ble”. Get your Scot Skipper – possible. Make lifelong friends – possible. Reach your greatest potential – possible.
We’re excited to announce that Laser Performance has revealed the 2014 Sunfish Worlds boat design. This is the first time in three years that special-edition boats will be built for the Sunfish World Championship, to be hosted at Camp Sea Gull this October. The unique sail and hull design proudly displays the Sea Gull and Seafarer logos with the 2014 Sunfish Worlds logo.
