A Part of the Team

It's been an exciting and busy week at Camp and I'm glad that I am here to be a part of it. "Staff Training" week marks both the end of many weeks of getting Camp ready for the summer season and the arrival of our first group of campers on Sunday. During this week I have been impressed over and over again by the young men and women who have been assembled to lead the hundreds of campers who will fill Camp this summer. They will do an awesome job! (I rarely use the word awesome, but I used it on purpose this time.)

I Am That Mom

The beauty of being at Camp for so many years is I am now answering questions, filling in blanks and sometimes…alleviating the anxiety levels of camper moms who are either my former campers or summer staff colleagues. Most emails or calls begin with, “hey, so I have become that mom.”

Reflections from Starter Camp

Today marks the closing day of Starter Camp. Approximately 800 campers, ages 6-9, have packed their suitcases full and are ready (or maybe not so ready) to head for home. But as our first wave of campers departs, I wanted to share some humorous and even profound reflections shared with me about the past 5 days.

Camper Reflections
“I went off the zipline for the first time this week. I was scared, but the counselor said to look fear in the face and it would not be as scary. He was right, fear looks pretty funny from that high up.”

I joined Camp Sea Gull in April as the new Program Director.  Adjusting to my surroundings of a camp full of gentleman has been a great experience. The staff that I work with makes my transition easy, as they are talented, dedicated, and self-motivated to deliver programs at a high level. My co-directors take the time to walk me through the nuts and bolts of how to view Camp through the lens of a young man, so that I might have applicable context for bettering their summer experience.

Updated July 4 at 5:00 p.m.

Our great adventure to Raleigh has come to a close. All campers and staff are safely back onsite and ready to celebrate the Fourth of July together at our joint-camp fireworks display tonight!

While we plan to jump right back into our Camp routine, the events of the past few days will cause us to postpone the weekly letters home from staff. We will send you letters via email by the end of the day on Tuesday.

Arthur Doesn't Stop the Fun!

Sitting down to write a Thank You note to my sons’ counselors, I’m drawn to reflect on the 48-hours of Hurricane Arthur that will be embedded in the memories of both my boys and their counselors for years to come.

I know this because 18-years ago, I experienced an early-season Hurricane at Camp as Seafarer’s Motorboating Chief.

My Grandfather, Winfree Slater, heard about Camp Sea Gull from a friend of his and he thought it would be a good camp in which to send his 8 year old grandson.  The year was 1982.  That, seemingly simple, decision changed me for the rest of my life.

Sharing Camp with Others

Last summer, four of my good friends from UNC took a leap of faith to come work at Camp Sea Gull with me, without ever having been campers or counselors.  Brantley, Dave, Matthew, and Will were quickly welcomed, and it was exciting for me to witness my friends become a part of the same community that has meant so much to me for many years.  This is what makes Sea Gull and Seafarer so unique.  Camp is not just a welcoming place, but a high-spirited community that naturally draws people in.  What results is an extensive network of family and friends that all believe in Cam
